On Sunday, at Mount Maunganui, Kane Williamson showed off his ball-striking prowess. Williamson welcomed Taskin Ahmed’s re-introduction by stepping outside off and picking the ball up with the wrists over backward square leg in the 14th over. Bangladesh’s anxiety grew in the slog overs. At the start of the 18th over, Williamson whipped in the air to deep square leg, but Tamim Iqbal fluffed the catch. The next ball – a rank full-toss – was belted back to Mashrafe Mortaza, the bowler, with fierce power. Mashrafe stuck his right hand out, and copped a stinging blow. He aborted the over and left the field, clutching his hand. After the match, Mashrafe said he needed a scan to find out the extent of the injury.
